Using non-toxic pool deck stains

About Non-Toxic Pool Deck Stains

Pollution is all around us and there are a variety of substances that come with it including toxic agents. Paints and varnishes, which are used for finishing decks, tend to release amounts of toxins into the atmosphere. Increased awareness of the hazards of these toxic emissions has resulted in the development of non-toxic stains, pains and even varnishes. Nowadays, most paint and varnish manufacturers offer non-toxic versions of their products in the low VOC (volatile organic compound) category, which is the primary source of toxic emissions.

The Pros of Using Non-Toxic Deck Stains

There are many health and environmental benefits to using non-toxic deck stains products. The reduced toxic emissions cause no discomfort to people who have allergies or sensitivity to chemicals. Non-toxic deck stains are also water-based in nature meaning that they’re very easy to clean up and maintain (simply use warm water and soap solution to clean it off).

Types of Non-Toxic Deck Stains

The term "non-toxic" is used here to refer to stains that contain very amounts of VOC. For example, while a toxic deck stain might contain approximately 300 grams per liter of this VOC, a non-toxic version won’t have any more than 200 grams per liter. There are even zero VOC deck stains available that contain no more than 15 grams per liter while also having no petroleum based solvents within them, opting for a water solution instead. Despite the low VOC, non-toxic deck stains do sometimes emit a slight odor until they have dried. However, for someone who’s sensitive to smell, a deck stain with zero VOC solution might be just the thing to check out.

The Price

While high VOC deck stains are far more hazardous, they are also far cheaper. Despite this, the medium and long term benefits of low VOC deck stains far outweigh any cost disadvantage in the short-term. These non-toxic deck stains are also a small step that we can make towards building a cleaner and healthier world.
